Founded by Derek and Katey Jackson, Better Athletes Performance was built from the ground up by two people who have dedicated their lives to sports, movement, and helping others grow into their full potential.
We’ve both known since we were young that we wanted to work in this world—to be in the gym, coaching, encouraging, and building better athletes. Now, owning a training facility and getting to serve the athletes of Lincoln is more than a business for us—it’s the fulfillment of something we’ve envisioned for years.
We’re here to help athletes get stronger, move better, and grow into well-rounded people—not just better players. At the end of the day, our goal is the same: leave better than you came.
Derek is the architect behind Better Athletes Performance and the driving force behind everything we do on the training floor. As a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with a degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition, Derek brings years of high-level training experience and an unmatched understanding of human performance.
His coaching career spans athletes of all ages and levels—from beginners just starting their athletic journey to professionals chasing peak performance. He specializes in biomechanics, athletic performance, and speed development, with programming that is calculated, science-backed, and athlete-specific.
Derek’s coaching philosophy is simple: train smarter, not just harder. That means targeting the right intensity to build explosive power and long-term durability, prioritizing movement quality over empty reps, and tracking measurable progress to build real confidence. He blends physical preparation with mental resilience, performance psychology, and leadership development—helping athletes grow both on and off the field.
From developing customized training plans to coaching the technical details that separate good from great, Derek builds athletes who are smart, strong, and ready to compete. His standards are high, his programming is intentional, and his passion for the craft shows in every rep, every drill, and every athlete who walks through the door.

Coach Phalen Sanford
Phalen brings both elite athletic experience and coaching talent to the Better Athletes team. With a degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition, Phalen knows firsthand what it takes to succeed at the highest levels.
A former Nebraska Cornhusker, Phalen went on to sign with the Las Vegas Raiders and now brings that same intensity and discipline to the athletes he trains in Lincoln. He’s currently pursuing his Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification and is quickly becoming a cornerstone of our coaching staff.
Phalen coaches alongside Derek and plays a key role in executing our programs, pushing athletes, and leading by example. He’s not just a great coach—he’s also an exceptional mover and demonstrator, helping athletes understand the how and why of everything they’re being asked to do. Whether it’s on the turf or in the weight room, Phalen sets the tone and keeps the standard high.
Performance Coach & Facility Manager
Coach Katey Jackson
Katey brings a unique blend of education, coaching, and connection to the Better Athletes team. She’s a Certified Personal Trainer through NASM with a degree in Physical Education and Health and a minor in Kinesiology. A former collegiate soccer player and high school coach, she also spent six years teaching PE and Health, giving her a well-rounded perspective on how to guide athletes both in and out of the gym.
Her coaching philosophy is centered on empowering individuals to unlock their full potential—physically, mentally, and emotionally—through consistent effort, smart programming, and strong relationships. Whether you're a young athlete, a returning player, or brand new to structured training, Katey believes in meeting you where you’re at, celebrating growth, and pushing you to become the best version of yourself.
She helps athletes build strong foundations, cultivate a growth mindset, and carry the lessons of movement, discipline, and teamwork into every aspect of life. Above all, she values connection—making sure every athlete feels seen, supported, and confident in the process.
